Bomb blasts in Mallorca and kills two Policemen

July 30th, 2009

The basque terrorist group ETA is responsible for the explosion early this afternoon (13:50), which hit a police car on patrol in Palmanova, Calviá, one of the most important touristic destinations in Europe.
Yesterday, a 200kg bomb targeting dozens of Civil Guard members and their families, including children, ripped through their 14-storey barracks building in Burgos, northern Spain, but with no defeats.
The origin of the explosion was most likely a limpet bomb attached to the underneath of the Nissan patrol car that was being driven by the two deceased civil guards at the time of the explosion. According the a representative of the government of the Balearics, Ramón Socías, the two agents were dressed in civilian gear at the time and were carrying out maintenance works.
One of he two victims is a 28-year-old Guardia Civil officer from Burgos. The second victim was a 27-year-old man from Pamplona who had lived in Palma for the past two years who was a trainee officer.
The date will be cause for celebration for the minority of Basque nationalists who share ETA’s aim of the violent achievement of independence for the Basque Country from the rest of Spain.
Security forces believe the terrorists, weakened by arrests of top leaders, and long relatively dormant, are trying to put on a show of force to prove they are still able to strike at the Spanish state and to maintain morale among ETA supporters, and also to achieve a negotiation with the Government of Spain.
Right now the airport is open again as Spanish authorities had closed ports and airports on Mallorca from the time of the terrorist attack during three hours in the operation know as “Jaula” (jail).
The resedence of the Royal Family of Spain is at only 10 kilometers from the place, and two of theur daughters arrived yesterday to the island.

Researchers Develop New Tool To Visualize Past and Future Lunar Eclipses

July 14th, 2009

Lunar eclipses are well-documented throughout human history. The rare and breathtaking phenomena, which occur when the moon passes into the Earth’s shadow and seemingly changes shape, color, or disappears from the night sky completely, caught the attention of poets, farmers, leaders, and scientists alike.

Next Moon eclipse prediction

Moon Eclipse

Researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute have developed a new method for using computer graphics to simulate and render an accurate visualization of a lunar eclipse. The model uses celestial geometry of the sun, Earth, and moon, along with data for the Earth’s atmosphere and the moon’s peculiar optical properties to create picture-perfect images of lunar eclipses.

The computer-generated images, which are virtually indistinguishable from actual photos of eclipses, offer a chance to look back into history at famous eclipses, or peek at future eclipses scheduled to occur in the coming years and decades. The model can also be configured to show how the eclipse would appear from any geographical perspective on Earth — the same eclipse would look different depending if the viewer was in New York, Seattle, or Rome.

“Other researchers have rendered the night sky, the moon, and sunsets, but this is the first time anyone has rendered lunar eclipses,” said Barbara Cutler, assistant professor of computer science at Rensselaer, who supervised the study. “Our models may help with investigations into historical atmospheric phenomena, and they could also be of interest to artists looking to add this special effect to their toolbox.”

Graduate student Theodore C. Yapo presented the study, titled “Rendering Lunar Eclipses,” in late May at the Graphics Interface 2009 conference.

The appearance of lunar eclipses can vary considerably, ranging from nearly invisible jet black to deep red, rust, to bright copper-red or orange. The appearance depends on several different factors, including how sunlight is refracted and scattered in the Earth’s atmosphere. Yapo and Cutler combined and configured models for sunlight, the solar system, as well as the different layers and different effects of the Earth’s atmosphere, to develop their lunar eclipse models.

For the study, Yapo and Cutler compared digital photos of the Feb. 21, 2008, total lunar eclipse with computer-rendered models of the same eclipse. The rendered images were nearly indistinguishable from the photos.

Another model they created was a rendering of the expected 2010 lunar eclipse. Yapo said he looks forward to taking photographs of the event and comparing them to the renderings. One potential hiccup, he said, is the April eruption of Mt. Redoubt in Alaska – volcanic dust in the Earth’s stratosphere can make a lunar eclipse noticeably darker and more brown. Yapo and Cutler’s models can account for this dust, but they performed their simulation prior to the eruption, and assumed a low-dust atmosphere.

Pet Airlines, the company for travelling animals

July 14th, 2009

A new airline for pets is taking off with weekly flights to five airports across the country. Beginning July 14, Pet Airways is flying pets to and from Baltimore/Washington International; Midway in Chicago; Rocky Mountain Airport in Broomfield, Colo., near Denver; Hawthorne Municipal Airport near Los Angeles; and Republic Airport on Long Island serving the New York City metro area.

The airline allows cats and dogs to travel in carriers in the main cabin of the plane, rather than the cargo hold. While some airlines allow small animals to fly in the cabin as long as their carriers fit under the seats, Pet Airways has no limit on size.

The carrier will not transport human passengers other than crew and attendants to care for the animals during flights. Pet owners will have to fly separately.

One-way fares start at $149. Many of the flights on the airline’s limited initial itinerary are already booked full with a waiting list depending on the animal’s size.

To prevent pets from getting sick, there won’t be any beverage or snack service.
